Sometimes, you just have to be adventurous when common dishes fail to satisfy your lust for something new and nyummy. Although I’ve been to City One Megamall, Kuching for many times, it was only a few months ago that I decided to explore a food outlet called “Master Mi” a Taiwanese brand. My intention was to try out the noodles but when I stood at the counter, I saw other interesting meals.
So, I ordered two cups of Latte Coffee, two pieces of toasted bread and a plate of cheesy potato wedges. I know, you might be thinking those were common dishes too, but they looked so tempting in the photos. Thank goodness, the taste was not disappointing at all. While waiting for my food, I stood wondering and looking for tables and chairs in the outlet until I saw a small staircase leaning on the wall, leading to the upper floor. I didn’t ask the cashier about it but, carried my food tray and confidently walked upstairs.
Having my meal upstairs gave me the sense of privacy. I could focus having a conversation with my family without having to look outside the outlet and there were only a few diners there.
The little room was very cozy and they had magazines to read. I don’t mind sleeping there if given the chance to do so. Hehe. So, hey! maybe you should try eating there too and leave your feedback here. Till then, bye bye!

Note: The setting of stalls in the pictures may change over time due to the upgrading work at Rumah Asap.
Rumah Asap or “Smoke House” was quite popular in Miri, until recently, Kuchingnites started talking about it in Social Media as if “Santa Claus is coming to town”. The excited locals throng their ways to Rumah Asap as early as 5pm during weekends and be rest assured, you’ll be eating in smoky environment and leave the place with BBQ smell all over you. Oh well, you might consider taking another round of shower after that. hehe.
But, that’s the fun part of it right? Definitely, once you reach there, your eyes will be drooling at all the crispy BBQ pork hanging on the metal bar, displaying their golden juicy meat, well done BBQ catfish, mouthwatering “pansuh”, and all other inner parts that you can think of. Wait! There’s more to Rumah Asap because food lovers can ask for fried food, soup and noodles too. All these at reasonable prizes.
My advice, to all food lovers out there is that, if you wish to eat here, please come early, not because the food will be sold out, but the parking space will be tough to find. It does not provide a proper parking lot except for little spaces to squeeze on next to someone’s house. You really have to find your way to get a parking space and to fight for the roadside parking made for St Stephen congregations. So far, I never felt disappointed by it because I always arrived there before 6 pm.
Recently, they added a bar called “Route 18” at Rumah Asap. So, it’s indeed a good news for people who love drinking. It could be a nice port for those who wish to hang out with their buddies till late night while enjoying the Dayak cuisine. Nevertheless, it is a good platform for the Dayaks to put their cooking skills to test and bring about new Sarawak entrepreneurs.
Till then, see you in my next blog entry.
Every time I hang out with friends, there will always be food on the table and whenever I go for a break, I will drive to a nearby restaurant for food. Now, I wonder what will happen to us if God didn’t create food. Will our life be dull? Food is no longer a necessity but something that touches every aspect of our life.
FOOD IS A BUSINESS
Before civilization, people looked for their own food to feed themselves and their families. No one thought of selling any to others. But, as years go by, we began to exchange food to satisfy our curious taste buds and source of lucrative income. Since then, our mind told us that it’s easier to buy food than producing it ourselves and opportunists see its potential as a source of income. Today, food business is at every metropolis, city, town and village around the globe.
FOOD IS AN ART
How we prepare food has also changed. From simple cooking with only salt and pepper, to adding variety of ingredients in our cooking. We started to explore new ways of cooking and those lucky ones, go on TV and became celebrity chefs for their artistic cooking. Cooking competitions, TV programmes, trade and expos are some of the activities promoting food as an art.
FOOD CONNECTS PEOPLE
Is there any social meeting that doesn’t involve food? Could they be birthdays, weddings, reunions, corporate meetings, seminars, conventions? No matter what event we are involved in, we get connected through food. Food is part of the reasons why people meet each other. It makes us sit together and start having conversations. Just like a famous saying “Wen you feed someone’s stomach, you open his mouth”.
Just my two cents opinion.
